The IPPS held a series of four regional ‘listening exercises’ in 2023 to better understand different regional contexts and approaches to delivering the 100 Days Mission. This listening exercise highlights the successes of Latin America and Caribbean countries in tackling COVID-19, Zika virus and other diseases in the region. This included the effective use of surveillance systems and the agility of regulatory bodies to rapidly approve therapeutics. Concerns were raised around the concentration of vaccine production in a relatively small number of countries and the general heterogeneity across the region in terms of national capacity for research, product development and production. A move towards a cooperative regional approach would be beneficial but require strong governance and policies designed for the long-term.
