The IPPS held a series of four regional ‘listening exercises’ in 2023 to better understand different regional contexts and approaches to delivering the 100 Days Mission. This listening exercise revealed that there is a strong correlation between East Africa’s high concentration of biodiversity hotspots and the burden of emergent infectious disease in the region which has experienced close to 100 significant outbreaks of highly infectious diseases in the last 20 years. This has equipped the region with significant expertise in pandemic preparedness. Despite this, a number of significant challenges remain including a lack of funding for R&D and a reliance on imports and aid for the supply of DTVs. The group noted countries are keen to improve collaboration in the region and pool national strengths in research, surveillance and regulation which could transform the pandemic preparedness landscape in East Africa.
