100 Days Mission Goal Recognised in UN Political Declaration, Strengthening the Foundation for Global Implementation

The International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat (IPPS) welcomes the adoption of the United Nations Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response and its recognition of the importance of making diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines available within the first 100 days of a future pandemic threat. This reflects growing international recognition that investments made before a crisis occurs in research, manufacturing and preparedness systems are essential to enabling the rapid development and deployment of medical countermeasures during future health emergencies.

We congratulate the co-facilitators, Armenia and Rwanda, and the President of the General Assembly for their leadership throughout the negotiation process. We also recognise the many Member States, regional organisations, 100 Days Mission partners, the Friends of the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, the World Health Organization, and others whose collective efforts helped advance an ambitious outcome and secure inclusion of the 100-day goal in the Declaration.

The inclusion of the 100-day goal is a significant milestone. Having first gained traction through the G7 and G20, it is now reflected in a UN Political Declaration endorsed by 153 Member States and supported by the wider international community. This provides a stronger foundation for countries and regions to incorporate faster development, manufacturing and deployment of medical countermeasures into their preparedness planning and capabilities.

Adoption of the Declaration is an important achievement, but progress will ultimately be measured by implementation. The focus must now be on translating commitments into action through sustained investment, stronger research and development ecosystems, manufacturing and regulatory readiness, and collaboration across national, regional and global levels. Achieving the 100-day ambition will require countries and regions to build and maintain the capabilities needed to respond rapidly and equitably when future health threats emerge.

IPPS looks forward to supporting Member States and partners as they build on this momentum. Together with the WHO Pandemic Agreement and broader efforts to strengthen the global pandemic prevention, preparedness and response architecture, the Declaration provides an opportunity to accelerate progress towards a more coordinated, resilient and equitable system for responding to future pandemic threats.
